With its cool, carefree atmosphere, Denmark's capital is a city that won't disappoint the curious traveller!

My Top Sights:

  1. The Little Mermaid Statue: as the one of the most famous mermaid statues in the world, expect large crowds surrounding her, all trying to take her picture and get that perfect shot!

  2. Nyhavn: this 17th century canal is the city's iconic tourist spot. Famous for the picture perfect colourful townhouses, bars and restaurants that line the water's edge, it's ideal for a gentle stroll followed by a laid back drink to truly soak up the holiday atmosphere!

  3. Strøget: the main shopping district in the city- made up of high street names along with high end brands- for a spot of retail therapy!

  1. Amalienborg Palace (The Royal Palace): this is the official residence of the Danish monarchy and if you're in the square at noon, you can also witness the changing of the guard (which happens daily). And if you want to learn more, there is museum here dedicated to royal history.

  2. Other points of interest include: The Tivoli Gardens, Freetown Christiania, The National Museum of Denmark, Rosenborg Castle and The Round Tower. As I was only here for a short time, I did not get to visit these other attractions; however they are on the list for next time!

Need to knows!

Currency:

Danish Krone (DKK).

Language:

Danish is the official language spoken here but English is widely spoken.

Plug type:

For Denmark, it is plug types E & K but it can also be C & F. I often take a worldwide travel adapter so I am fully prepared wherever I am.

Travel:

Often included as a port on many cruise ship itineraries. Copenhagen Airport (CPH) is the main airport (also referred to as Kastrup). It is conveniently close to the city centre with the train/metro being the quickest and cheapest mode of transport.

Cash or card?

Both are accepted yet card is more common here (as some places are moving to being cashless). Personally, I use both. I usually use card when possible but I like to have a little cash on me just in case!

My Experience:

I visited Copenhagen last summer as part of a Baltic Cruise. It was the last port on the itinerary so we were able to stay for a short two days. Personally, I would recommend staying a little longer in order to see more sights in a more relaxed manner. Although I saw a few of the famous attractions, I don't feel that I truly experienced all that this interesting and vibrant city has to offer. Also, with it being the summer, it was very busy! Although this definitely added to the buzz and excitement of atmosphere, just expect the usual crowds at many of the famous tourist hot spots. I would love to return and stay a little longer to discover more of this stunning city.
