Change, choice and challenge... Read all about my last two months as I navigate a new life in bonnie Scotland!

So the last time I wrote about my fresh start, I was a little over two weeks into the adventure. Two months later, I am still here and I will give you all the updates regarding the various highlights and challenges that I have encountered along the way.

It's been a little longer between blogs than I'd have liked, but I think this is the reality of a busy adjustment period that comes with relocating. However, this does mean that I will have more to share with you as I reflect on the ups and downs of the last couple of months.

Read on to hear all about my highlights, top tips and lessons learnt.

My Highlights So Far:

  • visiting the animals at Edinburgh Zoo on a sunny Sunday;

  • going to The Stand Comedy Club in Edinburgh for one hour of hilarious entertainment and endless laughs;

  • plucking up the courage to perform a few of my poems at a poetry open mic night;

  • visiting friends and family for lovely catch-ups;

  • and finally, starting to feel more settled in a new place.

    Top Tips for Relocating:

  1. Daily and weekly check-ins. Just because you have made the move, sorted everything that needs to be sorted, doesn't mean that everything is sorted. It is still important to check in with yourself in order to assess how things are going, and more importantly, how you are feeling. In the last couple of months, I decided to move again due to challenges with locations and commutes. Yes, I initially didn't want to admit this or act on yet another change, but it was definitely important to be proactive and make the change for a greater benefit in the long run.

  2. Stay connected with friends and family. In the last couple of months I have made the effort to visit friends and family for the weekend. I have also made time for scheduled zoom calls with friends and family. I have found this to not only be fun but also to be somewhat grounding. When you're meeting new people all the time during a relocation, spending time with people that have known you for a while can be space to relax, unwind and provide some much needed perspective.

  3. Plan fun things each week! You've relocated to a new place: enjoy it! Yes, there can be lots of paperwork, chores and just general 'adulting' to be done, but you want to remind yourself of all the fun there is to be had when exploring a new place! As mentioned above, I have tried to do some sightseeing, with visiting the zoo, poetry nights and comedy shows etc.

  4. Take a break! Okay, you're trying to be organised and make progress on your goals, you're trying to meet lots of new people and make friends, you're trying to have new experiences (and have fun!), the list goes on... But, if you need to take time out to relax and be by yourself, do it! Not everything needs to be achieved today...

  5. Don't forget who you are! Do things that nourish you. Remember your why. Work towards your goals. Practise positive self-talk. Enjoy the experience. This is your journey and you've got this.

Lessons Learnt:

  • Listen to your gut instinct! If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't! I often think that just because something looks right 'on paper', doesn't always mean that it is right... Although it is always good to use logic and look at things from all perspectives, sometimes our emotions and feelings should be the driving force if they cannot be ignored or silenced.

  • Give things time! With anything in life, we often want to see results straight away but as the old saying goes: "Rome wasn't built in a day...". Sometimes when we have this monumental change, we also have this incredible momentum pushing us forward into thinking that we need to accomplish everything NOW! Yes, with change comes this renewed energy and drive, but it is still important to practise patience and flow.

  • Give people time! Let people show who they are (for better or for worse!) Often we can rush into relationships, friendships, "situationships"... whatever the connection may be and it can be tempting to think we know people (for better or for worse!) But in actual fact, it can be better to sit back and let that person be who they are, before deciding on whether or not you want them in your space.

This is a snapshot of my experience so far and I will be posting a monthly blog: updating you on my adventures in Scotland along with my highlights and lessons learnt!
