With an abundance of things to do along with its fun, friendly vibes, this cool capital is a must for your travel bucket list!
The gateway to this bustling and vibrant metropolis - if travelling by boat or ship - consists of the rugged, natural beauty of Stockholm's archipelago: thirty thousand emerald islands hugged by the deep blue, Baltic sea. With such contrasting landscapes (of both city and nature), Stockholm offers something for everyone and you will not be disappointed! Often a port included on many Baltic cruise itineraries, it is no surprise as to why; it really does make for an exceptional 'sail in' and 'sail out' experience. Being able to capture this 'picture-perfect' scenery, up close and personal, is a serenely humbling experience. For keen, landscape photographers, you will feel very much in your element (if not a little spoilt!) with the spectacular setting that surrounds you. It is no wonder that the pop group ABBA opted to reside on one of these islands for creative inspiration!
Top sights to see!
The Vasa Museum: this is a must! Holding a preserved 17th century ship (the only one of it's kind in the whole world), you will learn all about its tragic history: from its fateful sinking to its complex resurrection and finally, its impressive preservation. An incredible feat of restoration to provide you with a vivid picture of the nautical world during this era.
ABBA The Museum: fun and interactive, it successfully provides the history of this iconic and legendary pop group in a comprehensive and accessible way. Prepare to sing, dance and reminisce over a multitude of catchy classics!
Skansen Open Air Museum: the world's oldest open air museum. This provides a chance to see Swedish history, traditions and animals from a range of regions across different centuries.
The Old Town (Gamla Stan): in this historic district you will find a labyrinth of cobbled streets overflowing with tempting souvenir shops, an iconic plaza lined with colourful, quaint townhouses along with an abundance of restaurants and coffee shops. Don't forget to check out the times for the ceremonious changing of the guard which takes place in front of the Royal Palace. This happens daily in the spring and summer months (around midday) but times can change during the autumn and winter season.
Other recommended activities include: a refreshing beverage at the famous Ice Bar or a gondola ride up to the top of the Avicii Arena. Here you will experience unrivalled, panoramic views of the whole city.

My Experience:
I visited this energetic capital back in August and ever since I have felt inspired and compelled to write this blog post in order to share my love for it. Having only spent two days exploring, I would recommend staying for a minimum of three days - if you don't want to feel too exhausted by the end of your trip! There is plenty to do on every corner so you will not find yourself bored or at a loose end. Whether you love museums, deliciously sizeable sandwiches, or simply soaking up the charming atmosphere of the Old Town, this capital contains all this and plenty more! Prepare to be: in awe of the Vasa warship; inspired and uplifted at the ABBA Museum; relaxed as you mooch around the Old Town; and finally, very cold if you decide to brave the Ice Bar! This is definitely a city (and country) that I would love return to!
