Get ready to be blown away (literally and metaphorically!) by the natural, rugged beauty of this windswept and quaint coastal town that sits on the northern tip of Denmark...

Top sights to see!
Grenen Beach: a very popular tourist location as the beach sits at the most northern point of the country.
It is where the North Sea meets the Baltic Sea thus a popular spot to paddle, as you can have one foot in each sea! You can literally see the waves meeting in the middle, which makes it a unique experience. Swimming is prohibited though due to the dangerous currents.
The beach is vast and long, surrounded by the very natural landscapes of impressive dunes and windswept greenery. The stroll to the tip takes at least twenty minutes or so (depending on whether you are having a relaxing stroll or speed walking!) but the Sandorman- a beach tractor -is also available for rides to and from the entrance of the beach and the famous northern tip. The beach is naturally stunning so a trip here is simply a must when visiting Skagen!
A Stunning View of Denmark's Northern Tip! The Grey Lighthouse: 46 metres in height with 210 steps to climb. It offers magnificent views of Skagen's spectacular and unique coastline (as seen the in the pictures above).

The Town: idyllic, clean and 'postcard perfect'. With the red roofed yellow houses that line the cobble streets along with the other colourful and bright architecture, it really is the epitome of a cute and cosy, quaint Danish town.
The Harbour: another 'picture perfect' spot! This pretty harbour front is one of Denmark's most famous. On a beautiful sunny day, the boats glisten white and shine bright against the backdrop of wooden maroon buildings (with white trim) that surround the marina. Here you can find restaurants, fishmongers and a peaceful atmosphere.
Other points of interest include: The Råbjerg Mile (a migrating sand dune), Skagen's Museum and finally, the Skagen Bunker Museum. As I was only visiting for a day, I didn't have the opportunity to explore these other places of interest. However, if I return in the future, these are next on the list!
Need to knows!
Currency: | Danish Krone (DKK). |
Language: | Danish is the official language spoken here. |
Plug type: | For Denmark, it is plug types E & K but it can also be C & F. I often take a worldwide travel adapter so I am fully prepared wherever I am. |
Travel: | Often included as a port on many cruise ship itineraries. The closest airports to Skagen are Aalborg Airport and Laeso Airport. It is also possible to travel by ferry from Sweden. |
Cash or card? | Both are accepted. Although there were a couple of ATMs in the town, I would recommend carrying some cash for buses to Grenen beach etc. |

My Experience:
I visited Skagen in summer time of last year (as part of a Baltic cruise itinerary). I absolutely loved this stop, as it it had both the beauty of a traditional and charming Danish village along with the beauty of a vast and picturesque beach. I found the experience of paddling where two seas meet both surreal and magical (even though it was busy with other tourists doing exactly the same thing!) and it is a moment that I will never forget! The views from the lighthouse were breathtaking (as you can see from the pictures) and the charming town also provided countless opportunities for picture taking. Overall, a wonderful morning spent on the beach followed by a wonderful afternoon exploring the town!
