New Year: New Me? The Follow-Up...

So you've the goals but how do you get the GO and keep it in 2025?

Reality Dawns

Okay, so we've finalised our goals for the year. We know what we want and where we're going. We begin the year with the best of intentions but after a little time (maybe a week or two, even a day!), that initial enthusiasm and motivation begins to wane... Suddenly, those early morning gym sessions, evening classes or healthy night time routines feel like too much effort and their long term benefits suddenly feel immaterial when compared to the immediate present. We find ourselves thinking: "it's just too much work!" We've all been there and it's definitely a very common and normal response so don't be hard on yourself!

Below I have put together a few different approaches that I have tried and tested over the years and ultimately, found rather useful in changing my mindset for the better. Again, there are some you might find useful whilst others not so much! You might already be implementing them in your everyday life or you may have some other techniques that you know work for you. If so, I would love to hear from you!

A Supportive Approach

  • Planning in advance: preparation is instrumental when trying to make any change or achieve a particular goal. Whether that be organising your gym kit the night before a morning session, having a work space set up for writing that novel, food prep at the weekend to secure a week of healthy meals or even using a planner to allocate specific slots for that particular priority. A good plan is key for securing long term success!

  • Accountability: this is great for that extra little push in the right direction! Not only does this mean that you have to 'check in' with someone, but the simple act of vocalising your goal to others means that it will feel much more real: you've released it into the world! This notion of accountability could take all different forms: a gym buddy or personal trainer to keep you motivated for those days when you just don't feel like it; a life coach who you keep updated; or maybe a support group for that particular area that you are currently working on. Furthermore, sharing with others may also allow for the acquirement of top tips and that extra bit of support on those days when you really need it!

  • Positive self-talk: this is key! Be compassionate and kind to yourself. Not every day will run smoothly when making any change (big or small!) and some days may feel like they have fallen short of your own expectations but that's okay! Progress isn't a 'one size fits all' situation and it looks different for everyone. Naturally there will be ups and downs and this is often the shape of progress. But equally, congratulate yourself on the wins - no matter how big or small you view them - as this positive mindset will reinforce your motivation for the change!

  • Keeping a journal: this links with idea of positive self-talk, as reflection can be a constructive way of reassessing what is working and what isn't but from calm and relaxed non-judgemental space. It may also allow you to see any potential triggers and "disrupters" on your path to success. Personally, I'm not always that disciplined with journaling, so for this year I have decided to opt for a planner that uses daily prompts to promote gratitude and self-care assessment. So far this has been working well for me as I find the slight variation of questions more engaging and less overwhelming than 'free writing'.

  • Meditation & Visualisation: so so so important! The power of thought is overwhelmingly powerful. I truly believe that it starts with our thoughts, mindset and imagination. Using meditation and visualisation to tap into our thoughts, dreams and desires is not only a great starting point when establishing what it is that we truly want, but it also trains our brains into believing in these exciting possibilities. Meditation is a superb strategy for providing a sense of grounding and moments of calm in a chaotic world but it also creates space for our brain to seek out what truly matters. Furthermore, being in a grounded, open and relaxed state can help us to live our lives with more ease.

Finally, visualisation and manifestation are tools that I have been using for the past couple of years and I have definitely found them to be incredibly beneficial. I strongly believe that visualising that win, achievement, moment, lifestyle- whatever form the dream may take- has a profound affect on the signals to the brain thus making these visuals feel more real thus attainable. I will be exploring these concepts further in future posts.

Be Inspired!

This is one of the most important aspects of maintaining motivation: we need to be inspired! But how do we continue to feel inspired during the harder times? Surrounding yourself with anything that you find inspirational is a good start! Whether that be creating a stellar soundtrack of your favourite songs, listening to a favourite podcast, watching a documentary that uplifts and fascinates you, revisiting impressive works by those in your chosen field, or even creating a vision board: filling it with words, images and photos of all that you desire. Whether it's listening, looking, watching or creating, this immersion of inspiration will continue to keep you excited. Keep the process fun and that's half the battle won!

Final Words

In my next blog, I will be providing a series of questions to act as prompts in order to help you explore the following when reflecting on your 2025 goals: what strategies are currently working for you; what could be improved and what could be considered as the potential 'disrupters'; and finally, what approaches could be implemented to further secure the kind of progress that you are looking for. I will also be posting (very soon!) an update on my current journey, with all its twists and turns and unexpected bumps!
